Not all mountaineering boots are created equal and if you are willing to make an investment on a state of the art, durable boot that will perform well in the coldest climates, highest peaks, and most adventurous outings (think Elbrus!) then look no further. Trekking poles are essential for longer distances, snowy trails, and downhill slopes (to save your knees)! Z-poles are great because they weigh less, collapse and extend easier than traditional models, and take up less space when folded.
PRO TIP
No matter which poles you get, make sure that they are adjustable to account for the varying terrain since they need to be set to different heights when going uphill versus downhill. For flat terrain, your elbows should be at a 90-degree angle. However, for downhill, they should be 5 - 10 cm longer so you aren’t bending too much, and they should be 5 - 10 cm shorter on uphill so you are not over-stretching.
