On this epic Grand Canyon backpacking adventure we’ll traverse remote and rugged inner-canyon loops between the South Rim and the Colorado River and see parts of the canyon most never do. This trip is great for experienced and new backpackers alike, just be sure to pack your sense of adventure! It’s a true backpacking trip, which means everyone will be required to carry their own weight- including tents, sleeping bags, and food (all together these items will amount to about 30-40 lbs)! Rest assured you’re in great hands with our professional guides with experience and passion for the region and backpacking!
The exact route and trails utilized will vary based on conditions, permit allowances and the group, which makes expedition-style adventure especially unique! Our hike will be made up of variations of the Hermit-Bright Angel Loop, Hermit-Boucher Loop, and New Hance-Grandview Loop. The camps and explanations in our itinerary are representative of what you can expect and give you a good idea of the day to day. Remember, mileage is not indicative of difficulty, and you should expect very steep downhill and uphill climbs for at least two hiking days (and a total of ~6,400 ft of elevation loss and gain through out the whole trip). Be sure to thoroughly read the Daily Breakdown and make sure you’re fully prepared for the distances and elevation gains and losses this trek entails.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The adventure dates may be adjusted +/- one day until permits are finalized 4 months in advance of departure (when Grand Canyon permits are issued). We will be in touch then to confirm your dates so you can book your flights and plan accordingly!
We rated our Grand Canyon trip a 4 out of 5 on the WHOA Adventure difficulty scale due to the steep elevation gains and losses and potential extreme heat. This is all while carrying all your own backpacking gear weighing approximately 30-40 lbs, which is no joke!
CONDITIONS
GO WITH THE FLOW
The Grand Canyon can be hot, sunny, and unforgiving to say the least! But we’ll be well prepared, setting out early each day to avoid excessive midday heat. It can still get chilly in the evenings, so layers will be your best friend. We plan our trips in the fall and spring to reduce the chances of rain and hot temps, but that said be ready to embrace what Mother Nature throws our way, and put on a layer and dance when things don’t go as planned! Remember, the difference between an adventure and an ordeal is your attitude!
TRAINING
YOU WILL ROCK THIS!
Descending and ascending nearly 4,000 feet isn’t for the faint of heart—or knees! As with all WHOA Adventures, the better trained you are, the more enjoyable your experience will be. While training, make sure you are breaking in your boots and backpack. Wear your pack with weight inside, and work your way up to 30-40 lbs for extended periods of time to ensure you are prepared to carry your gear in the canyon for long days.
Bottom line, stay active, break in your gear, and start conditioning your legs now for steep and steady uphills AND downhills. Prep yourself as much as possible - your future self will thank you!

Yes! Whether it’s your first time backpacking or you’ve logged hundreds of miles in the backcountry, this trip is for you. The WHOA team is here to make sure you feel prepared and comfortable with gear choices, orient everyone to Grand Canyon specific tips and tricks, and give you the resources you need to train and pack properly.
A lot of the gear you’ll need for this backpacking trip is provided at no extra cost! This includes a 2-person tent, 60-65 L backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad. (You’re also welcome to bring your own if you already own it and it's up to the standards you'll need for this trip.) We’ll also supply and prepare all the food and purified water you'll need throughout the hike. This hike takes grit and will and is by no means easy, but honing and learning the skills to backpack in the backcountry, and the reward of being immersed in pristine nature make it more than worth the hard work! Not to mention, having the support of the WHOA team and community by your side, will make it fun and full of laughter!
-
Going on a WHOA trip can be life changing! We create a fun and supportive atmosphere where it is safe to stumble while we all learn together. Not to mention, our women-powered team takes care of ALL the permits, planning, and trip details (like including tips for the guides and gear like tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mats and backpacks), so that you can focus on the hike and enjoying the experience!
Backpacking in the backcountry will leave you with a serious sense of accomplishment and new skills, and also connected with nature in a way you can only do by disconnecting. We intentionally designed these trips to be long weekends so you can fit this much needed and deserved “me time” into your busy schedule. Whether it’s a reunion trip for WHOAlums or you’re new to the community, we can’t wait to share this experience with you!
-
On every WHOA trip, the majority of our groups are made up of solo travelers. The greatest thing about WHOA is that we might start the journey as strangers , but we leave as family! If you're traveling solo, we'll thoughtfully pair you up with another solo traveler to room/tent with throughout the adventure. Odds are you’ll leave this trip with several lifelong adventure buddies!

A once in a lifetime adventure requires adequate training, and we think preparing is actually part of the fun of taking on a challenge like this! One of the best ways to train is to get out there and hike as much as possible. If that’s not an option, wearing your gear while going up AND down long staircases will simulate the extreme elevation gain and loss we'll have on our trek. Be sure to wear and break in the boots and backpack you plan on bringing (or something similar if you plan on using one of the provided backpacks), as this helps prevent blisters and gets your shoulders, back and hips used to the points of contact and weight. As you’re training, continually add weight to your backpack, working your way up to the ~30 lbs you’ll be carrying on this adventure.
Remember, it’s all up here - mental fortitude is just as important as physical strength! Be ready to embrace the changing conditions and literal ups and downs that come along with the elevation gain and loss on these trails. Bottom line, the more physically AND mentally prepared you are, the more you’ll be able to enjoy getting to know your fellow adventurers and taking in all the amazing views!
If you’d like some additional expert guidance on training, we recommend reaching out to Adventure Coach Becki Rupp at Trailblazer Wellness who can put together a personalized training plan just for you. -
The South Rim of the Grand Canyon can be hiked year round, and we choose the Spring and Fall because that’s when you're likely to get the mildest temperatures and fewest crowds. (There’s a good chance we might not see anyone other than our group while we’re out on the trail!) That said, we’ve had snow in May and 100°F temps in March (Mother Nature always keeps us on our toes), so we’ll be ready for everything! When we do our gear checks on Day 1, we’ll adjust our packs accordingly to make sure we have everything we need and nothing more.
-
Food in the backcountry is not only important sustenance but can also be a morale booster on tough trail days; which is why we take food seriously! You can expect three meals a day, consisting of food that is lightweight, high calorie, and easy to prepare. We can accommodate food for vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, and/or dairy free people, so make sure you let us know on your HUB before the adventure. If you have any specific questions or concerns about the meals and meal prep, feel free to reach out to us!

It’s not a perfect system and carbon offsetting isn’t an exact science, but we believe it’s more important to take action now, in every way that we can. All our offsetting programs are certified by our partners at Sustainable Travel International. At the moment, our traveler’s international airfare to the destination is beyond our scope, and not included. Flights are the largest carbon emitter on most of our adventures, so we encourage all our travelers to consider doing it independently through the airline or with our partners at STI.

It’s of the utmost importance to us that any giving back we do is sustainable and fills a need that is of value to our partners. For that reason, our visits and partnerships can and do vary depending on the season, the organization's needs, and the abilities and desires of our group. Bottom line, in each case, we do our best to seek out local partners that are doing great, sustainable work, and we work closely with them to understand their needs to create an experience that will truly be of value to them and you!
