FAQ
-
WHOA plus offers the same thrilling adventures as traditional WHOA trips but at a slower pace. Activities are carefully researched to ensure that plus size women can participate, and that the safety equipment and gear can accommodate travelers in larger bodies (think camping chairs, wetsuits, climbing harnesses, you name it!). But it’s also the intangible things that make WHOA plus special. It’s about finding recommendations for plus size gear that fits, not just clothing but sleeping bags, daypacks and a host of other items. It’s about sharing training plans for strenuous adventures that don't include making yourself smaller, but making yourself stronger. And most importantly it’s about bonding with other women who know what it’s like to experience life in a larger body.
-
In order to make our trips as enjoyable as possible we may need to add an extra day to a trek, provide additional guides or porters or book different accommodations. This special attention is part of what makes WHOA plus different!
-
Usually the community that travels on a WHOA plus Adventure is a U.S. size 16+. This is to create a space where women that have experienced similar things living in a plus size body can feel a sense of belonging. Women who have experienced being in the back of the pack or have concerns about size appropriate gear have found great relief and joy when they are with others who can relate! We recognize that traditional adventure travel has left out plus size people in many aspects from advertising and media, to making specialized (sometimes life saving) gear, to ensuring canoes and boats will accommodate travelers. In these trips your needs and your body are not an afterthought. This is why WHOA plus was created.
-
All WHOA Adventures have always been and continue to be size-inclusive. In some instances there may be activities on traditional WHOA adventures that have weight restrictions, which would not be the case on WHOA plus adventures. WHOA plus came to life as a result of the Curvy Kili Crew’s 2019 Kilimanjaro climb and the overwhelming support and interest we received from plus size women wanting to join a community of like-bodied travelers! The Curvy Kili Crew’s journey has inspired and helped shape how we create future adventures for plus size women. WHOA plus is meant to address the challenges plus size hikers face by providing a space where like-bodied women can share tips with each other, hike at similar paces, and offer each other support.

Yes! We are able to accommodate a range of restrictions. Because you are going to be traveling in countries and regions with less options, you can expect to receive foods that naturally fit your restrictions. Meaning if you cannot have gluten, you can expect to eat a lot of rice and potatoes, but would not be given things like gluten-free bread. Since you’ll still have as much food as you need, but less variety, we recommend that you bring a few of your favorite condiments in order to jazz up the options (think Parmesan Cheese and hot sauce).
REVIEWS
“I don’t know if this is a big surprise, but there’s so many things that we don’t have to worry about on this trip, and that’s super helpful. Being with the WHOA plus group, some of us are fighting some huge body anxieties, so to not have to deal with transportation, food, or any form of reservation, is lovely…
We hit the ground running in Iceland, and never looked back. I hope you folks realize how life changing offering adventures to women in bigger bodies is. It’s done more then just give me a cool vacation.”

“There are not many tours for plus sized women and I have found a lot of trekking tours are all about the destination and not the journey. I felt like this was more about discovering yourself and about building friendships. I have never been in a group tour where the support has been so amazing and the other people so uplifting! The mountain got in my bones and I really feel like it has changed my life for the better, and I have made lifelong friends.”

“I felt really in my element and empowered to jump feet first (literally and figuratively) into every new experience. That surprised me - like maybe I'm tougher than I give myself credit for? Every WHOA trip has genuinely changed my life and taught me so much about myself and the world, and I wouldn't be who I am without these adventures.
Understand that even though you're doing new things and it seems scary, this is a controlled environment with lots of people looking out for you who want you to succeed, you spent your hard earned $$$ to be in this beautiful place, and you're extremely capable. Do it scared.
