MONGOLIA

THE NOMAD EXPERIENCE

FROM THE GOBI TO THE ALTAI

This adventure is unlike anything else we offer. No summit days, no technical know-how, no set training plans—but 100% adventure. We’ll hike, bike, and road trip far beyond the beaten paths of the Gobi Desert and Altai Mountains, all the while forming connections with locals that transcend cultural and language barriers.

Mongolia isn’t an easy place to travel, but if you’re up for the challenge it will certainly reward you, it may even redefine everything you know about adventure travel! Unlike most meticulously curated itineraries, our loose structure allows the magic of Mongolia to unfold and happen to you, making every experience unique, personal, and memorable. It’s a true adventure in letting go and going with the flow, but it is true what they say—you’ll get out of it what you put in.

Anything, honestly! One day you could be herding goats and sheep through the desert on a bicycle, the next trekking up a nearly vertical incline alongside a young eagle huntress. No day is like the other, but that’s part of the fun!

Our itinerary will change and evolve as we go, so be ready to embrace spontaneity because that's what adventuring in Mongolia is all about. Every day is intentionally under-planned to leave room for the magic of Mongolia to unfold. But don’t worry—there will be plenty of activities, diverse landscapes, wildlife sightings, and cultural connections to keep you on your toes. Throughout this journey, we’ll be in the hospitable hands of our local female guides who genuinely love their home country and can’t wait to share it with you!

While nothing is set in stone, one thing is certain: our Mongolia Adventure will take you far outside of your comfort zone. Please thoroughly read the Daily Breakdown to make sure you understand everything involved in this adventure, especially the need for a flexible and adventurous mindset when things don't go as planned. Your future self and fellow adventurers will thank you!

We rated our Mongolia trip a 3 out of 5 on the WHOA Adventure difficulty scale because the hiking and biking are more exploratory than intense cardio. This adventure is more mentally challenging than physical, and you need to be able to let go of plans and let the trip take you wherever it goes!

TRAINING
DREAMS DON'T WORK UNLESS YOU DO

As with all adventures, the better trained and mentally prepared you are, the more enjoyable your experience will be. Compared to some of our other adventures, Mongolia is more of a mental adventure than a physically demanding one. Yes, we’ll tackle multiple day hikes in the Altai Mountains and spend a few days biking through the Gobi Desert, but if you’re an active person with gear that’s already been broken in, you’ll be able to enjoy these activities just fine.

Mentally, be prepared to encounter last-minute changes in plans, disconnect from cell service, sleep in tents and gers, squat over hole-in-the-ground toilets, and skip a couple showers here and there. You may even face a few logistical challenges, but you’ll never have to worry—our local guides will always make sure your safety is their top priority when problem solving.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST
REAL TALK

It takes a certain kind of person to enjoy Mongolia. Someone who can let go of an itinerary and roll with changes, because there will be plenty. While Mongolia is modern and its people progressive, it’s rooted in its nomadic way of life, which is probably very different than what you’re used to (no #vanlife here). But if you love camping, disconnecting, and being spontaneous, you’re in the right place!

If you’re willing to let go of creature comforts, embrace a simpler way of life, and open your heart to endless possibilities, Mongolia and its people will fully embrace you. So start working on your Mongolian now - Sain baina uu!

All our offsetting programs are certified by our partners at Sustainable Travel International. At the moment, our traveler’s international airfare to the destination is beyond our scope, and not included. Flights are the largest carbon emitter on most of our adventures, so we encourage all our travelers to consider doing it independently through the airline or with our partners at STI.

DAILY BREAKDOWN

NOTE: All times are approximate!

DAY 1

ULAANBAATAR

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar (UBN), the capital city and home to roughly 45% of Mongolia’s population. If you’re up for it, we’ll spend the day with one of our local female guides discovering the local side to this vibrant city. The day is not about museums or shopping – it’s about having experiences that showcase the diversity and urban way of life in this great city compared to that of the rural population we’ll see later. We’ll visit the Nogoon Nuur (Green Lake) community project - a community space created for the local population of the nearby Bayangol ger. In the evening, we’ll get the team together for drinks and dinner to kick off our amazing adventure!

Included Meals: Lunch, Welcome Dinner
Stay:
Hotel Nine or similar
Arrival Logistics: Arrive Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar (UBN) by 10am

DAY 2 - 5

GOBI DESERT

Today we’ll load up our bikes, hop in our Furgons, and hit the road! Over the next few days we’ll see granite rock formations, dry riverbeds, steppe, and desert. We’ll also plant trees with the Gobi Oasis Tree Planting Project, and stay and connect with locals in Erdenedalai, Mongolian for Jewel Ocean, an area of the Gobi that sees few international visitors.

wHAT TO EXPECT ON THIS EPIC GOBI ADVENTURE…

The true beauty of the Gobi is found in the little moments spent with locals learning about their culture and connecting with nature. We keep the itinerary open in order to allow those moments to happen organically and not feel rushed. You could end up herding livestock on the back of a neighbor's motorcycle, racing past horses on bicycles, pulling over for lunch at an epic overlook, seeing gazelles and endemic animals like two-humped camels and endangered Przewalski’s horses—all without encountering another tourist for days.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Stay: Tent camping + Ger homestays with shared local shower house

**NOTE: We’ll have support vehicles along with us on the bike rides, so you can hop in at any time if you’ve had enough!

DAY 6

GOBI DESERT TO ULAANBAATAR

Today we’ll head back to Ulaanbaatar (with the option to stop along the way to stretch our legs with an impromptu bike ride)! Time permitting, you’ll have the rest of the day to explore on your own. Our local trip guide will be on hand to help point you in the direction of anything specific you might be looking to explore in UB!

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Drive Time: 7+ hours
Stay: Hotel Nine or similar

DAY 7

ULGII TO ALTAI

In the morning, we’ll fly far west to Ulgii and drive to the small community of Altai in the Bayan Ulgii Province deep on the Chinese border. Our destination is the summer pasture of Kazakh herders Asker and Ahgul and their six daughters; one of whom, Aigerim, is a young female eagle hunter! The views of lush alpine meadows, open plains, dense forests, high snowy peaks and the crystal-clear rivers and lakes are so worth the effort it takes to get here!

Included Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Flight Time: 2+ hours
Drive Time: 5+ hours
Stay: Private ger homestay

NOTE: There is a 15 kg (10kg check-in and 5 kg hand luggage) weight restriction on this flight. Hand luggage ‘officially’ restricted to 1-piece. Excess baggage charges are between $4 - $7 per kilo depending on the route. The domestic airline may change the flight time schedule closer to the day of departure, and we will adapt our itinerary accordingly!

DAY 8 - 10

ALTAI MOUNTAINS

In the company of our host, a modern day Kazakh eagle huntress, and her family, we’ll enjoy the wilderness of this glorious region. On day hikes we’ll experience the organic Kazakh style of exploration by leaving the route flexible and in the hands of our guides. Following a more rigid route would be wrong in a country of such freedom! Instead, our focus becomes getting to meet and know our local hosts in their homeland and see how they truly live.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THIS EPIC KAZAKH EXPERIENCE…

This truly is the road less traveled, so we’ll have to be prepared for a mixture of terrain on our day hikes with everything from dry river beds to mountainous alpine ridges! Although we set the location in advance, the route is not set in stone, allowing us to be as flexible as possible in relation to the weather and ground conditions. Distances per day will be around 9 mi (15 km), but be prepared that some could be shorter or longer days. Meals will be hearty and rustic as all food has to be carried with us, and prepared by our local trip assistant.

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Stay: Ger homestays

DAY 11

ALTAI TO ULGII

In the morning, we’ll take the long drive back to Ulgii, where we’ll spend the remainder of the day relaxing and exploring alongside our Kazakh translator, Jako, and her family. We’ll be able to visit a great local market and meet the women of a local NGO called Otau Crafts. These women take great pride in supporting themselves and their families while also keeping their centuries old history and traditions alive by crafting rugs using only the wool from their sheep. In the evening, we’ll reconvene for a casual and festive meal with Jako in her home, complete with dancing and music!

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Drive Time: 5+ hours
Stay: Homestay with shared local shower house

DAY 12

ULGII TO ULAANBAATAR

Today we’ll head back to Ulaanbaatar! After we get settled into our hotel we’ll have some down time before heading out to see a performance full of throat singing, contortionists, and dancing by the Tumen Ekh Ensemble. Afterward, we’ll have our Celebration Dinner to toast to our amazing Mongolian adventure!

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Celebration Dinner
Drive Time: 1+ hours
Flight Time: 2+ hours
Stay: Hotel Nine or similar

NOTE: Domestic flight departure and arrival times are TBD and often change or are delayed (part of the adventure)! For this reason, we use this entire day as a travel day and leave the itinerary for the day and evening open and flexible. There is a 15 kg (10 kg check-in and 5 kg hand luggage) weight restriction on this flight. Hand luggage ‘officially’ restricted to 1-piece. Excess baggage charges are between $4 - $7 per kilo depending on the route.

DAY 13

ULAANBAATAR

We’ll say our goodbyes (for now) before you head to the airport to return home, or continue on adventuring!

Included Meals: Breakfast

Itinerary subject to change based on availability and unforeseen conditions, but that's part of the adventure! Even when things change, trust you'll be well taken care of with WHOA quality, professionalism, and TLC!
