WHICH TRAVEL INSURANCE IS RIGHT FOR ME?
THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO NAVIGATING THE RIGHT TRIP COVERAGE FOR YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE
When shopping for travel insurance, it’s important to read all the fine print and understand the plan you’re purchasing to make sure the benefits work for you, your personal situation, and the type of adventure or travel you’re taking on. We can’t emphasize enough to do your research before purchasing your travel insurance plan, and don’t just assume the plan that comes with your credit card is sufficient! Below are five factors you need to consider before purchasing your perfect plan, plus adventure travel insurance providers to consider!
FIVE THINGS TO CONSIDER
BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR TRAVEL INSURANCE PLAN
1
HIGH ALTITUDE
Some insurance companies only cover activities up to a certain elevation. So if you’re traveling to high altitude, you’ll want to ensure that you have coverage in your plan up to the elevation you’re traveling.
2
CANCEL FOR ANY REASON (CFAR)
This benefit is usually offered as an add-on benefit, and not all insurance companies offer it, so pay special attention to see if yours does. If you’re looking for a CFAR benefit most insurance companies require you to purchase the policy no more than 10-21 days from putting down your initial trip deposit to qualify for the benefit. Additionally, be sure to insure the total trip cost, not just your deposit amount.
3
PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS
Not all travel insurance companies cover pre-existing conditions, so if this is a concern for you, you should make sure the plan covers your needs. You may only qualify for a pre-existing conditions waiver if your travel insurance policy was purchased near the time of your initial trip deposit date (usually has to be purchased no more than 10-21 days from initial trip deposit).
4
ACTIVITY RESTRICTIONS
Some travel insurance plans have activity restrictions like bungee jumping, skydiving, heli-skiing, and other extreme activities. Be sure to understand your plan and make sure it covers you for all of the activities you’ll be taking on during your trip.
5
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Most travel insurance plans cover the majority of the world, but there are certain countries that might be excluded from coverage, as well as travel above certain Latitudes North and South. Additionally, if you are traveling to multiple countries, you can list the country where you will be spending the majority of your time, if the option to list all countries you’ll be visiting is not available.

Global Rescue is medical evacuation coverage, NOT travel insurance, but still equally important to understand and consider! Medical evacuation coverage can help you in true emergency situations, especially in remote and hard to access regions, where an emergency evacuation could cost you more than $100,000. While many travel insurances say they cover medical evacuation, some plans make you pay then claim and get a reimbursement at a later date. With Global Rescue, you would never see a bill. There are 7, 14, and 30 day member plans to choose from, as well as an annual membership option (ideal for travelers who are going on more than one adventure per year). Global Rescue does not take the place of travel insurance. It’s an additional product and protection while you’re out adventuring, and worth it to consider!
